You need an idea or a character.

Idea:

The idea must be central to the story, but the story is not about the idea.

Find a unique idea.

Snowball the idea.

Character:

You have to do bad things to your characters.

Character is how people react to bad things.

Find their breaking point.

The have to grow.

Wonder and Worry – You must worry about the character and wonder how they are going to get out of trouble.

Advice:

Keep things happening.

The Story is the Thing.

Dialogue must enhance the story.
